Amanda Feeney’s Mentorship on My Personal and Professional Growth

As a non-traditional student returning to college after sixteen years in the workforce, I was eager to learn as much as possible and gain new skills that could help me stand out in a competitive job market. One of the most valuable experiences of my college career was working with Amanda Feeney; manager of The Street Team, adjunct instructor of digital art, and leader of the marketing club who taught me how to utilize digital art software and helped me create several projects that I am incredibly proud of.

At the beginning of my first semester, I had little experience with digital art software and was unsure of my abilities. However, Amanda’s clear and patient guidance helped me gain confidence with each project we worked on together. Under her mentorship, I was able to complete a variety of assignments, including creating a new campus map in collaboration with the marketing club, a logo and brand kit for a local commercial real estate company in collaboration with The Street Team, and a photo mosaic mural in the main lecture hall on campus showcasing the history and spirit of the college.

Working on these projects required a great deal of attention to detail and a deep understanding of the software, but Amanda was always there to offer advice and encouragement when I needed it. Her mentorship went beyond technical skills, as she also taught me the importance of clear communication, organization, and project management. These skills have proved invaluable in my career as well as in my personal life. Her insight and leadership have inspired me to follow arts management as a minor when I transfer next semester from SUNY Rockland Community College to SUNY Purchase.

Perhaps the greatest impact Amanda had on me was inspiring me to become a mentor myself. As a non-traditional student, I have years of work experience that I can share with my younger peers. Amanda’s mentorship showed me the value of sharing knowledge and offering guidance to those who are just starting out. As a result, I have taken on several mentoring roles both in and outside of the classroom. Amanda will also always share valuable insight on scholarships and financial aid assistance which has helped me afford to continue my education. She believes in her students, recognizes passion, and motivates everyone around her.

In conclusion, Amanda’s mentorship had a profound impact on my college experience and my personal growth. Her clear guidance, patience, and encouragement helped me develop a new set of skills and create projects that I am incredibly proud of. Additionally, her mentorship inspired me to become a mentor myself and share my knowledge and experience with others. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such an excellent educator and mentor.
