Dear NISOD Members,

This message is to inform you about recent developments concerning content on our website, particularly the mandated removal of references to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) from our site, following the passage of SB17.

In alignment with the newly implemented law, we are compelled to make these changes to ensure our compliance. The University of Texas at Austin’s Vice President of Legal Affairs recommends the revision of language that includes “DEI” and the combined use of the words “diversity, equity, and inclusion.” Consequently, we find ourselves obligated to alter our website content accordingly. Namely, references to “diversity, equity, and inclusion” will now be “equitable opportunities and outcomes.”

We understand the concern and disappointment this may cause, especially considering the pivotal role DEI plays in our shared mission. Yes, it is disheartening to experience legislative restrictions that attempt to impede our ability to freely express and champion principles that are fundamental to our community. However, while we are required to adhere to the prescribed modifications, we will continue our commitment to DEI within the confines of the new law. As such, we want to assure our members that NISOD will continue its Most Promising Places to Work in Community Colleges partnership with Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, and that this collaboration will remain a crucial avenue for recognizing and celebrating institutions that champion diversity and inclusion. Furthermore, we are committed to including equitable opportunities and outcomes-related content at our annual spring and fall conferences. Despite the adjustments mandated by SB17, we will strive to provide opportunities for discussions and presentations that align with our values and promote the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We appreciate your understanding during this challenging period. Please know that we remain committed to serving your needs as best as we can within the constraints imposed. Should you have any concerns, questions, or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,

Edward J Leach, PhD, CAE
