Classroom Management in the Millennial Age!

Workshop Description

Today’s students have grown up with worldwide chaos that has eroded their trust and respect in adults. Nowhere is this more relevant than in the classroom. Educators are struggling to find answers to classroom management problems that millennial students bring into the classroom. What was once only a K-12 problem has now also become a problem for higher education. How do we win our students trust and respect so that we can deliver our important lessons? How do we provide a classroom that is safe and predictable for students who feel the stress of an unpredictable world?

During this workshop, you’ll learn how to create a safe environment for everyone through research-proven strategies that create mutual respect for educators and students. Through the use of proactive strategies rather than reactive strategies, you’ll leave the workshop with a toolbox of strategies you can use to avoid being reactive to students’ disrespect and low-level discipline challenges. You will also discuss how to maintain self-control in the classroom, arrange the classroom for maximum student engagement, teach-to behavioral and academic expectations, and handle students who may not respond to proactive strategies using a dignified REFOCUS strategy. You will also discuss five beliefs that can cause issues in the classroom and you’ll be encouraged to challenge your beliefs and to work towards a positive paradigm shift in how you view your teaching, classrooms, and students.

By the end of this workshop, you will know or be able to:

  • Learn how to create a safe and caring environment that meets the needs of millennial students.
  • Gain an understanding of the Student Assessment and Rapid Response Model (SMARTR) and leave with proactive strategies that diffuse low-level potential conflicts between you and your students.
  • Develop classroom rules and routines that reinforce the skills that every student must have in order to be a successful learner.
  • Explore different classroom arrangements that create positive and safe learning environments.
  • Learn how to manage higher-level challenging behavior through non-punitive strategies.
  • Advance towards a shift in teaching paradigm that works with today’s students.

Activities:

  • Structured large and small group discussions
  • Active involvement in developing Teach-To’sSMARTR Strategies, and Classroom Arrangement.
  • Materials provided for active involvement, notetaking, and takeaways.
  • Built-in time for you to practice strategies with your peers.

Participants can claim a digital badge and certificate upon completing the workshop and a post-workshop survey.
