Guttman Community College

Where: New York, NY

About: Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is CUNY’s first new community college in over four decades. The College officially opened its doors in midtown Manhattan, overlooking Bryant Park, on August 20, 2012. It is remarkable but not surprising, given how student-centered the College is, that in just seven years Guttman has been ranked the #1 community college in New York State!  The College’s high graduation rate (43% three-year graduation rate for the 2015 entering cohort) testifies to the success of its innovative academic model and to the dedication of its faculty and staff to student success.

About: Joe Ben Welch, Ph.D., was named RPCC’s first Chancellor and is responsible for building RPCC from the ground up. Under Dr. Welch’s leadership, RPCC experienced unprecedented growth. In 2010, RPCC was named the fastest growing community college of its size in the nation by Community College Week.  RPCC’s 2013 graduating class of 206 students was larger than the college’s first student body.
