Community College Month
April is Community College Month, a time to celebrate the accomplishments and successes happening every day at community colleges. According to the American Association of Community Colleges, “Nearly half of all undergraduates in the United States attend community colleges with good reason. These open-access institutions serve a diverse student population with diverse needs. From recent high school graduates to adult learners, the affordability and flexibility offered by community colleges can help put any person’s educational and career goals within reach.” Community colleges truly play an important and vital role in the postsecondary education delivery system.
This April several NISOD member colleges are celebrating Community College Month by honoring their faculty and staff and inviting local communities to their campuses. Read about the ways NISOD members are honoring Community College Month!
Bergen Community College
In conjunction with Bergen Community College’s (BCC) 50th anniversary celebration, BCC is hosting a full-day open house on April 12 that features tours, demonstrations, and workshops for the community. A “legislative lunch” hosted by BCC culinary students takes place at noon for federal, state, county, and municipal government officials. Prospective students and their families are visiting campus from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., and county guidance counselors are invited to attend a BCC hosted dinner.
El Centro College
El Centro College (ECC) is hosting its 2018 Spring Open House on April 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in its Wright L. Lassiter, Jr. Student Center. This event is open to the general public, high school students, and surrounding communities. In an effort to promote ECC’s specialized programs, there will be campus tours, information sessions, and information tables.
El Centro College’s President, Dr. José Adames, will briefly welcome everyone to the open house and a student performance will follow.
Fayetteville Technical Community College
Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) is celebrating Community College Awareness Month by organizing an informative social media campaign. Each Friday during April, FTCC is sharing one fact about community colleges on their social media accounts.
Metropolitan Community College-Kansas City
Metropolitan Community College-Kansas City (MCC-KC) is hosting a Community College Day on Saturday, April 28, at all five campuses. There will be hands-on activities, a welcome video, giveaways, and refreshments.
During April, MCC-KC is also planning a social media campaign (Twitter and Facebook) with quotes and pictures from a cross-section of students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
New Mexico State University-Alamogordo
New Mexico State University- Alamogordo (NMSU-A) is planning the following events in honor of Community College Awareness Month:
Spring Retiree Appreciation Day – NMSU-A retirees are invited to campus to celebrate their legacy.
RUSH! It’s a Spring Thing 2018 – This two-day event, organized by NMSU-A’s student organizations for students, faculty, and staff, will include scavenger hunts, bean bag tosses, a basketball game, and various presentations from faculty and community leaders.
Celebration of Excellence – This event is when NMSU-A recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding students, alumni, and scholarship donors.
Roane State Community College
Roane State Community College is hosting its annual Student Awards Night to celebrate the success of community college students. During Awards Night, students also give a commemorative pin to a faculty member who has been especially influential during the student’s community college experience.
Wallace State Community College
Wallace State Community College (WSCC) is celebrating Community College Awareness Month with many events on campus related to arts and culture, history, the environment, diversity, athletics, and more.
WSCC is also sharing stories of students and alumni in a community newspaper, social media, e-newsletters, and other media outlets throughout the month.
Each year during Community College Awareness Month, the mayors of the cities that WSCC serves sign resolutions and proclamations recognizing the institution and declare April as Community College Month.
