MAKING ACCREDITATION WORK FOR YOU

Through a better understanding of how a national agenda, regional programs and initiatives, and institutional objectives and priorities shape the accreditation process, workshop participants will be able to appreciate how accreditation can benefit the college. This session will be organized around some key questions, with the opportunity for participants to pose others both before and during it. 

What benefits should institutions expect from the accreditation process?

  • What claims do regional institutional accreditation agencies make about the value-added nature of their interactions with colleges and universities? How do the agencies translate these claims into required or optional accreditation processes?
  • What constitutes “value-added” from the perspective of the institution? How do these expectations shape the institution’s approach to accreditation processes? What could agency’s do to add value to the process(es)?

What are the critical issues that shape the context for institutional accreditation in the U.S. today?

  • How are these terms understood by the agency and by the institution?
    • Accountability
    • Transparency
    • Student mobility
    • Access
    • Cost and efficiency
    • Student learning

What challenges and opportunities arise from the increased emphasis placed on student learning?

  • What challenges and opportunities do institutions encounter? How does an institution respond to these challenges/opportunities?
  • What challenges and opportunities do regional accreditation agencies encounter?
  • In what ways has the increased emphasis on student learning shaped institutional and regional accreditation agency programs, processes, and services?

What challenges confront accreditation agencies as they seek to continue to provide effective quality assurance/quality improvement processes in the U.S.?

  • What are the perceptions of regional accreditation among oversight agencies, coordinating boards, and institutions?
  • What role, if any does accreditation play in the development and implementation of higher education public policy (state, region, nation)?
  • How is U.S. accreditation faring in the global higher education marketplace?
