About the Commitment Pledge

Pledge signingIn an unprecedented and unified action, NISOD and five other national organizations representing the nation's 1,200 community colleges, their governing boards, their faculty, and their 11.8 million students, pledged to increase student completion rates by 50% over the next decade. Leaders of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), League for Innovation, Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCCSE), and Phi Theta Kappa joined AACC's President George Boggs in signing the Democracy's Colleges: Call to Action statement, on April 20, 2010, during AACC's national convention.

The Call to Action encourages "leaders from every sector and constituency of every college to commit and pledge mutually to promote the development and implementation of policies, practices, and institutional cultures that will produce 50 percent more students with high-quality degrees and certificates by 2020, while increasing access and quality."

Faculty and Staff Take the Challenge

Participants at 2011 NISOD Conference sign the pledge.NISOD’s unique role in the group of six organizations is that it is focused on the professional development of people—equipping and preparing faculty, staff, and administrators with the necessary skills to ensure that students do indeed succeed. NISOD’s goal is to show how to walk alongside students as they enter the open-door college and ensure that individuals who interact daily with students are prepared to help them complete a credential and/or successfully transfer to the university sector.

With this goal in mind, NISOD encourages community college faculty and staff to add their own voices and make their own commitments to this exciting and critical national movement by signing the pledge today.

College Challenge
On September 9, 2010, the presidents of AACC and ACCT wrote to member CEOs and board chairs to ask them to join in a call to action to engage community college institutions to advance the college completion agenda—increasing the number of students who complete degrees, certificates, and other credentials that have documented value in the work place. Today, numerous colleges across the country have signed the pledge.

Student Challenge
Phi Theta KappaPhi Theta Kappa is heading up the Community College Completion Corps, the student-led initiative to raise awareness of the importance of college completion. Phi Theta Kappa has created a student pledge and the materials you might need to build student momentum on campus and help ensure they commit to complete their individual graduation agenda.
